This will be my daily/weekly/as often as I can...blog about my adventures living in Guatemala for 6 months. Most of all it will be my place to keep friends/family/loved ones up to date on what the hell I'm going through...likely it will also serve as my psychiatrist, as writing usually does.

Kira,
Dylan was fluent in 3 months. I think the trick is NEVER to talk english to anyone while there. You must be immersed to get'er dun. Maybe the spirits are knocking out the short term memory, ha.
I was far from fluent at the end of 3 months. Dad just thinks I was fluent because I almost convinced him to order a tall glass of "mierda" at a high end restaurant.
I did learn at an accelerated rate though because I had no choice but to speak, hear, read, and write Spanish every day. I maybe had small talk in English for an hour every day for half the time I was there. It doesn't look like you'll be able to force yourself to do that though with all the fun and friends.
But maybe that's okay. You'll be able to hold your own by time you leave. You don't have to be able to debate in Spanish, just discuss options in food, directions, medical care, etc.
